You are more entitled to a position with the ruler than some of his intimates and trusted men. So mention the right that the ruler has over his close companion, his trusted one, and his intimate in terms of honor, status, and opinion, and the opinion that helps him in that is that he finds in him a familiarity and intimacy that he does not find in others.

So let this be among the things in which you guard yourself, and in which you recognize the ruler's excuse and his opinion.

And the opinion for yourself is likewise: if someone seeks to make you enter (into a matter) without your close companion, your intimate, and the place of your trust, your secret, your seriousness, and your jesting.

And know that almost every man has a predominant topic of conversation that he constantly talks about: either about a country among countries, or a branch of knowledge, or a class of people, or an aspect of opinion. And when a man becomes passionately attached to that, foolishness appears from him, and desire is recognized from him. So avoid that in every place, then especially in the presence of the ruler.

Bear what opposes you of the ruler's opinion:

Do not complain to the ruler's ministers and intimates about any opinion you have come to know that you dislike for him; for you would only make them aware of his desire, or bring them closer to him, and incite them to beautify that and to incline against you along with him.
