On the nature of civilization in creation.
And what occurs therein of desert and settled life, domination, acquisition, livelihood, crafts, sciences, and the like, and the causes and reasons for that. Know that since the reality of history is that it is information about human social organization, which is the civilization of the world, and what occurs to the nature of that civilization of conditions such as savagery, sociability, group solidarity, and various kinds of domination of humans over one another, and what arises from that of kingship, dynasties, and their ranks, and what humans adopt through their actions and endeavors of acquisition, livelihood, sciences, crafts, and the rest of what occurs in that civilization by its nature of conditions. And since lying is naturally inherent in reports and has causes that necessitate it. Among them are partisanship for opinions and doctrines, for the soul, if it is in a state of moderation in accepting reports, gives them their due of scrutiny and examination until it distinguishes truth from falsehood, but if partisanship for an opinion or sect mixes with it, it accepts what agrees with it from reports at first glance, and that inclination and partisanship becomes a cover over the eye of its insight from criticism and scrutiny, so it falls into accepting and transmitting lies. Among the causes necessitating lying in reports is also trust in transmitters, and the scrutiny of that goes back to validation and disparagement. Among them is heedlessness of intentions, for many transmitters do not know the intent of what they witnessed or heard, and they transmit the report according to what is in their assumption and conjecture, so they fall into lying. Among them is the illusion of truth, which is many, and it comes mostly from the side of trust in transmitters. Among them is ignorance of applying conditions to events because of the confusion and affectation that enters them, so the informant transmits them as he saw them, while they are affected contrary to the truth in themselves. Among them is people's seeking closeness in most cases to people of grandeur and ranks by praise, commendation, beautifying conditions, and spreading mention of that, so reports about them spread without reality, for souls are fond of love of praise, and people aspire to the world and its causes of prestige or wealth, and they are mostly not desirous of virtues nor competing in their people. Among the causes necessitating it also, and it precedes all that has been mentioned, is ignorance of the natures of conditions in civilization, for every event, whether essence or action, must have a nature specific to it in its essence and in what occurs to it of its conditions. So if the hearer is knowledgeable of the natures of events and conditions in existence and their requirements, that helps him in scrutinizing the report to distinguish truth from falsehood, and this is more effective in scrutiny than every aspect that presents itself.
And often the listeners are presented with the acceptance of impossible reports, and they transmit them and they are related from them. As al-Mas'udi related from Alexander, when the sea creatures prevented him from building Alexandria, and how he took a wooden coffin with a glass box inside it and dived in it to the bottom of the sea, until he wrote the images of those devilish creatures that he saw, and made statues of them from metallic bodies, and set them up opposite the building, so those creatures fled when they came out and saw them, and the building was completed for him, in a long story of impossible fables, from before his taking the glass coffin, and the impact of the sea and its waves with his body, and from before that kings do not expose themselves to such risk, and whoever among them adopted it has exposed himself to destruction and the breaking of the bond and the gathering of people to another, and in that is his ruin, and they do not wait for his return, from his vanity that, for a blink of an eye, and from before that the jinn have no known forms or statues specific to them, they are only able to take shapes, and what is mentioned of the multitude of heads for them, the intended meaning is ugliness and intimidation, not that it is reality.
And all these are invalidating that story. And the invalidating that makes it impossible from the point of view of existence is clearer than all this. It is that the one immersed in water, even if he is in the box, the air becomes tight for him for natural breathing and his spirit heats up quickly due to its scarcity, so its companion loses the cold air that moderates the temperament of the lung and the cardiac spirit, and he perishes in his place. And this is the reason for the destruction of the people of the baths if they are closed over them from the cold air, and those hanging in wells and deep pits of air if their air heats up with putrefaction and the winds do not enter them to ventilate them, for the one hanging in them perishes immediately. And for this reason is the death of the fish when it separates from the sea, for the air is not sufficient for it in moderating its lung since it is excessively hot, and the water that moderates it is cold, and the air that it has come out to is hot, so the hot prevails over its animal spirit and it perishes at once, and from it is the destruction of the thunderstruck and the like.
