In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
O God, make it easy and help.
The Compulsion (al-Jabr), to which Gabriel is attributed, and which is a path to all good things, has known that in my dwelling there is a hamata (a kind of tree) that was never afaniya (fresh), nor is the one who nibbles it free from need, yielding from the affection of my master, the noble Sheikh—may God thwart his enemy and continue his going to virtue and its enemy—such that if the high trees bore it, their branches would bend down to the earth, and the protected part of that fruit would be humbled.
Hamata is a kind of tree; when it is fresh it is called afaniya, and when it dries it is hamata. The poet said:
When al-Walid heads (towards me), she does not obey me ... I bent my hand to her with a hamata stick.
And I said to her: 'Keep to the Banu Uqaysh, for you are not pleasing in your aloofness.' And the hamata is described as being frequented by snakes; the poet said:
A brave one, who was a supporter of a family, was made available to it, hidden in the hamata.
And indeed the hamata that is in my abode finds from longing a burning, not by chance removal. And hamata is the burning of the heart; the poet said:
And of a worry that fills the entrails from it.
As for the hamata mentioned at the beginning, it is the kernel of the heart; the poet said:
She shot the hamata of a heart that does not turn away from her with arrows of a glance that were not strange.
And indeed in my worn garment there is a deep red ... and each with my tools, if it spoke it would mention.
My fragments, it is not dwelling in the mountain pass, nor overlooking
the veil, it did not appear in winter and summer, nor did it pass by a mountain or a hillside,
concealing from the love of my master, the noble Sheikh—may God strengthen the pillars of knowledge by his life—
